Advanced Psychological Studies

Adelphi, was the first institution of higher education on Long Island. Today, a faculty of more than 500 full-time and part-time professors serve a student body of almost 6,000 undergraduate and graduate degree candidates. To graduate students in the professions, and adults seeking a change in their lives and careers, Adelphi offers over 70 graduate degree and certificate programs; small classes; a committed expert and approachable faculty; the convenience of three campuses, in Garden City, Manhattan--Soho, and Huntington; accelerated programming, evening and weekend class schedules; and lifelong career development.
The Community
Adelphi's main campus is located in historic Garden City, New York. Only 45 minutes from Manhattan, the pastoral 75 acre campus is easily reached by both public and private transportation. Students live nearby in most cases and a host of opportunities to get together outside of the classroom are provided. Garden City and the other local communities offer fine dining, music, sports, and other cultural events at such venues as the Nassau Coliseum, Shea Stadium, and the Westbury and Jones Beach theaters. In addition, because Adelphi is so close to New York City, Adelphi attracts some of the top names in business, politics, and the arts as visitors and lecturers on campus.
Programs of study and degree requirements
Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies- Founded by Gordon F. Derner in 1951 the Institute was the first university based professional school in psychology. The five to six year Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology emphasizes a psychodynamic approach to human behavior, and prepares men and women for community practice. The two year Respecialization diploma program in clinical psychology equips doctoral psychologists to make a career shift from another area of psychology. Clinical facilities, on-campus clinical laboratories, in and out patient services, and psychotherapy practica ensure that students acquire extensive clinical experience.
The 36 credit Master of Arts in General Psychology enables students to advance their exploration of human personality, psychodynamics, developmental and social psychology, and Freudian and contemporary psychoanalytic theory. It is a part-time program, designed to serve three groups: 1) students who will be able to make use of a master's degree to advance and already established career direction; 2) students who have interest in future doctoral level training; and 3) students who have a general interest in clinical psychology, but who have no specific career path in mind.
