ADELPHI UNIVERSITY
School of Social Work
Garden City, New York

http://www.adelphi.edu
Adelphi, was the first institution of higher education on Long Island. Today, a faculty of more than 500 full-time and part-time professors serve a student body of almost 6,000 undergraduate and graduate degree candidates. To graduate students in the professions, and adults seeking a change in their lives and careers, Adelphi offers over 70 graduate degree and certificate programs; small classes; a committed expert and approachable faculty; the convenience of three campuses, in Garden City, Manhattan--Soho, and Huntington; accelerated programming, evening and weekend class schedules; and lifelong career development.
The Community
Adelphi's main campus is located in historic Garden City, New York. Only 45 minutes from Manhattan, the pastoral 75 acre campus is easily reached by both public and private transportation. Students live nearby in most cases and a host of opportunities to get together outside of the classroom are provided. Garden City and the other local communities offer fine dining, music, sports, and other cultural events at such venues as the Nassau Coliseum, Shea Stadium, and the Westbury and Jones Beach theaters. In addition, because Adelphi is so close to New York City, Adelphi attracts some of the top names in business, politics, and the arts as visitors and lecturers on campus. Recent appearances include former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, journalist Pete Hamill, activist Sister Helen Prejean, actress Vanessa Redgrave, author Jill Ker Conway, former Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, and writer Norman Mailer.
Programs of study and degree requirements
The School of Social Work is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and has been educating students for the social work profession since 1949. The School offers master's and doctoral degrees, as well as a post-master's certificate in advanced clinical practice. A wide range of field experiences is offered in urban, suburban, and rural settings.
The 64 credit Master of Social Work (MSW) program consists of 48 credits of classroom instruction and 16 credits of supervised field-work. The program is social-issue oriented from a multicultrual, gender-specific, cross-national perspective. Graduates are prepared to work creatively with individuals, families, small groups, communities, and organizations in two concentrations: (1) Health, Mental Health, and Chemical Dependency Services; and (2) Services for Families Across the Life Span. Students may study on either a full or part-time basis.
The Doctor of Social Welfare (DSW) prepares social workers for leadership positions in advanced practice, education, and research. The program requires a minimum of 48 doctoral level credits, a candidacy examination, an advanced practice internship, and a research dissertation.
The Post Master's Certificate Program in Clinical Practice is a nondegree program designed to provide social work practitioners with an opportunity to advance knowledge and sharpen skills in response to the needs of clients. The program consists of 5 required courses, 1 elective, and four continuing case seminars.
