Overview
Auburn is a state-assisted, comprehensive, Doctoral/Research university-extensive (Carnegie classification), with a storied past dating from 1856. It has a long tradition of academic excellence and graduate education, awarding its first undergraduate degree in 1860 and its first graduate degree in 1870. Since then it has awarded more than 35,000 graduate degrees, including 5,000 doctorates. The largest university in Alabama, Auburn has twelve colleges and schools in addition to the Graduate School-Agriculture, Architecture, Business, Education, Engineering, Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Nursing, Pharmacy, Sciences and Mathematics, and Veterinary Medicine. More than ninety buildings occupy a campus of Southern charm graced with stately trees and abundant flowers. Auburn is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The total enrollment is more than 23,000, of whom 3,000 are graduate students. The student population comprises more than 12,000 men and more than 11,000 women. Represented are every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and more than eighty countries. Graduate School enrollment includes more than 1,400 women and more than 1,000 students from minority groups and foreign countries. More than half of the graduate students are employed by the University as teaching or research assistants.
The Location and Community
The main campus of 1,871 acres occupies the entire southwest quadrant of the city of Auburn. The city's population is about 38,000, including resident students, in an area of 23 square miles. Auburn is 50 miles northeast of Montgomery, 110 miles southeast of Birmingham, and 115 miles southwest of Atlanta. Interstate 85 provides convenient access to Montgomery and Atlanta. The area has brief, mild winters and abundant sunshine.
Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The Graduate School offers programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in aerospace engineering, agronomy and soils, animal and dairy sciences, biological sciences, biomedical sciences, botany and microbiology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science and software engineering, counseling psychology, counselor education, curriculum and teaching, discrete and statistical sciences, economics, electrical and computer engineering, English, entomology, fisheries and allied aquacultures, forestry, health and human performance, history, horticulture, human development and family studies, industrial and systems engineering, management, materials engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, nutrition and food science, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, plant pathology, poultry science, psychology, public administration, rehabilitation and special education, wildlife science, and zoology. The Doctor of Education is also offered with major areas of specialization including counseling and counseling psychology; educational foundations, leadership, and technology; health and human performance; and vocational and adult education. The Specialist in Education degree may be earned in all departments of the College of Education. The M.S. and M.A. are available in many areas, along with nonthesis master's degrees in a number of fields. Minors also are available in biochemistry, community planning, ecology, economic development, environmental studies, molecular biology, sports management, and urban forestry. The Graduate Outreach Program offers graduate-level courses to off-campus students in engineering, business administration, accountancy, rehabilitation, and special education, and hotel and restaurant management. Auburn University has identified seven areas as peaks of excellence in graduate education: cell and molecular biosciences, detection and food safety, fisheries and allied aquacultures, forest sustainability, information technology, poultry products' safety and quality, and transportation. Students in these areas receive special consideration and support.

Facilities & Resources
The University, which has a graduate faculty of more than 1,100, provides various specialized facilities for graduate research. Among these are the Space Power Institute, the Alabama Microelectronics Science and Technology Center, the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, the Agricultural Experiment Station, the Engineering Experiment Station, the Scott-Ritchey Small Animal Research Facility, the Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Center for Aging Studies, the National Center for Asphalt Technology, the Truman Pierce Institute for the Advancement of Teacher Education, the Institute for Biological Detection Systems, the Pulp and Paper Research and Education Center, the Dauphin Island Sea and Gulf Coast Research Laboratories, and the International Center for Aquaculture. Auburn is a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Research Participation Program and has access to the facilities of the National Laboratory at Oak Ridge, the Savannah River Laboratory, the laboratories of the Puerto Rico Nuclear Center, and the University of Tennessee Atomic Energy Commission Agricultural Research Laboratory.
The main library has more than 2 million bound books and more than 2 million other books and materials in microformat. Subscriptions are maintained for 20,800 serials, including 12,800 journals. High-speed computer searches may be made in approximately 750 fields. The catalog is Web-based, including data bases, full-text materials, electronic document delivery, and digitized collections. The library is a U.S. depository, receiving government publications and documents; a map reference library with a collection of more than 124,700 maps; and a depository for U.S. patents. University Archives has more than 900 manuscript collections, 150,000 photographs, 7,060 oral history tapes and audio cassettes, and 4,400 motion picture reels.
Auburn University has complete Internet access through the Alabama Research and Education Network and is a member of the Internet II/UCAID consortium. This includes supercomputing capabilities and a fiber optic Ethernet network linking all buildings and offices on campus. Auburn is ranked among the top twenty-five most-wired universities in the United States.
Expenses and Aid
Full-time (10 to 15 hours) tuition and fees is $2905 per semester for Alabama residents and $7915 per semester for out-of-state residents. Nonresident fees do not apply to out-of-state students receiving a one-fourth-time or greater appointment as a graduate teaching assistant, research assistant, or assistant.
Financial Aid:
Auburn University funds approximately 1,700 graduate assistantships annually. Many additional assistantships are provided through grants and contracts from external sources. Graduate teaching and research fellowships, which cover tuition and fees, are available for graduate assistants.
Housing/Living Expenses:
Off-campus housing is available to graduate students. Off-campus housing includes a wide selection of apartments, private dormitories, and mobile-home facilities, averaging $2000 per semester. The director of housing provides information. The estimated student cost for one calendar year, including fees and room and board, is $16,000 for in-state and $25,285 for out-of-state students.
How to Apply / Application
Minimum requirements include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university and competitive scores on the General Test of the GRE or, in business, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). All application materials should be received at least six weeks before planned enrollment.
