City College of the City University of NY
New York, NY 10031

Overview
The City College of New York is the oldest institution in the City University of New York system. Founded in 1847 as the Free Academy, it was first housed at 23rd Street and Lexington Avenue. The name was changed in 1866 to the College of the City of New York; now it is called "City" or "CCNY." Although it originally granted only the bachelor's degree, CCNY began fifty-six years ago to expand its program offering to advanced levels. Since 1961, it has offered a wide range of master's programs, and through the City University of New York offers doctoral study on campus in the sciences, all branches of engineering, computer science, and psychology. CCNY is known for its commitment to academic excellence combined with access to higher education. Immigrants and their children have historically used the College as a vehicle for upward mobility.
The student body reflects a wide range of ethnic and cultural diversity. Students come from more than 100 different countries and speak more than 90 languages. Most are from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. The students lend an international flavor to the campus and reflect the ethnic diversity of New York City. This has led City College to develop extensive international linkages. There are student and faculty exchanges with universities in Africa, Asia, Israel, and the Dominican Republic. The total student enrollment is approximately 12,400; of these, 3,562 are graduate students.
The Location and Community
The campus occupies 35 acres in upper Manhattan along Convent Avenue in an area known as St. Nicholas Heights in Harlem. It is an urban campus within easy commuting distance of midtown Manhattan.

How to Apply / Application
Graduate study is open to well-qualified students who possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the equivalent from an international institution, and have an adequate background in the field of study they wish to pursue. Students are evaluated based on their previous academic record, generally with a minimum B average (3.0) required; letters of recommendation from scholars with whom they have studied; and writing samples, portfolios, and auditions (required by some programs only). International students whose native language is not English and who do not have a resident alien card must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
International Students
United States citizens and those applicants on temporary visas who have attended schools outside the United States should file the graduate application and complete the international student information requested on the back of the application. These applicants must meet the same standards as students educated inside the United States. In addition, students who are on temporary visas and whose native language is not English will be required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applications are available from the College or University Offices of Admissions.
