Clark University
Graduate Programs in International Development,
Community Planning, and Environment (IDCE)

Clark’s Graduate Programs in International Development, Community Planning, and Environment (IDCE) address one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century: sustaining environmental resources while promoting social justice and development. IDCE offers three master’s degrees. The first is designed for overseas and domestic development specialists interested in careers in gender analysis, community-based development, participation, and locally sustainable initiatives for management of natural and livelihood resources. The 10-course program (3 required) takes 18 to 24 months.

The second is a 12-month intensive program in geographic information systems and international development. It provides technical skills related to GIS, Global Positioning Systems, and remote sensing, plus a firm understanding of international development issues related to adoption and implementation of new technologies.

The third integrates the natural and social sciences to prepare professionals for risk analysis and hazard management, technology assessment, and environmental management.

The programs seek applicants with field experience who wish to advance their careers through gaining such professional skills as GIS, participation, gender analysis, environmental impact assessment, social assessment, local management of natural resources, digital image processing, project design, data presentation, conflict negotiation, and monitoring/evaluation.

Clark has offered graduate degrees in development for 25 years, based on sustained field research in 30+ countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

IDCE students benefit from:
  • a diverse faculty who link research and teaching to a deep commitment to improve global conditions,
  • a personalized program tailored to student priorities
  • linkages between human and ecological dimensions of development,
  • a world-wide reputation for addressing issues of environmental change,
  • a century-long tradition of research on issues of natural resource management and its impact on society,

Whether creating micro-finance opportunities for low-income communities in Central America, using GIS skills to manage national parks in Kenya, or analyzing environmental risk, IDCE graduates pursue careers on the forefront of change.
