Overview
FSU is a fully accredited public university and functions as a component of the ten-member State University System of Florida. While the University provides an extensive and high-quality undergraduate program, it has a central mission in graduate education and research. Its mission statement recounts that "the University's primary role is to serve as a center for advanced graduate and professional studies while emphasizing research and providing excellence in undergraduate programs." It has a distinguished faculty that has regularly included Nobel laureates and members of prestigious national academic societies. Its expenditures in sponsored research exceed $130 million per year.

Florida State enrolls more than 37,300 students, including more than 6,800 graduate students, of whom 68 percent were full-time. The overall student body is 56 percent women, and members of minority groups constitute 28.7 percent of all students. All fifty states and a large number of other countries are represented in the student body.

FSU awards more than 1,640 master's degrees and approximately 290 doctoral degrees each year. Students find many rewarding opportunities ranging from faculty positions in colleges and universities to postdoctoral appointments in other leading universities. The University has a Career Center to assist graduate students, and departments actively assist graduates in their search for employment.

The Location and Community
FSU is located in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida and the home of two other educational institutions, Florida A&M University, a historically black university, and Tallahassee Community College. Tallahassee is situated about 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, with some of the world's most beautiful beaches within an easy drive. The climate permits year-round outdoor activity. Recreation and sports activities abound for both participants and observers. Cultural activities are very rich as well. The outstanding Schools of Music and Theater are the catalysts for several series of plays, musical performances, and operas, and the University operates both public television and radio stations. A new culture and science center is slated to open soon in downtown Tallahassee.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
Florida State University (FSU), a Carnegie Research I university, offers doctoral programs in seventy areas and master's programs in ninety-nine areas. Advanced master's and specialist degrees are offered in twenty-eight programs. The University is composed of seventeen colleges and schools: Arts and Sciences; Business; Communication; Criminology; Education; Engineering; Human Sciences; Law; Information Studies; Medicine; Motion Pictures, Television, and Recording Arts; Music; Nursing; Social Sciences; Social Work; Theater; and Visual Arts and Dance. Students may pursue a number of interdisciplinary degrees, and several joint-degree programs are available.

FSU ranks among the top fifty universities in the country in the number of doctoral degrees awarded annually.

Facilities & Resources
Florida State University libraries contain approximately 2.1 million volumes, more than 18,000 serials, and more than 5 million other items. The libraries are committed to innovative use of new electronic technologies to enhance the research capabilities of students and faculty members. The University has more than eighty research centers, institutes, and special laboratories. Prominent among these are the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, which is dedicated to research in supermagnetic fields and has application in the life sciences, transportation, and materials research. Among other research facilities are the Super FN Tandem Van de Graff Accelerator in Nuclear Research; the Institute for Molecular Biophysics; the Learning Systems Institute, which focuses on instructional systems design technology; the Institute for Science and Public Affairs, which focuses on assisting state and private agencies and the related units on aging, populations studies, family studies, and policy studies; the Marine Laboratory, which is located on the northern Gulf; the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute; several centers devoted to atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies; the Center for Materials Research and Technology; and the Center for Music Research.

Expenses and Aid
Tuition and fees for an in-state resident is $5,828 for the academic year; this is based on 12 hours of graduate enrollment each term. The comparable amount for out-of-state graduate students is $19,656. Most students who receive a fellowship or an assistantship have both in-state and out-of-state tuition waived.

Financial Aid:
Graduate students may compete for many forms of financial assistance for graduate study. There is an annual competition for nonduty University fellowships with stipends ranging from $15,000 to $22,000, plus tuition waivers with some departments supplementing this amount. All graduate programs offer teaching or research assistantships, with some programs funding most of their enrolled graduate students. Assistantship stipends vary from program to program, but in combination with tuition waivers they are competitive with other universities. Student loans are available through the Office of Financial Aid, 4474 UCT, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32306.

Housing/Living Expenses:
The University provides some housing for graduate students, but the majority of graduate students secure private housing, much of it within walking distance or free bus service of the University. There are many apartment complexes in Tallahassee and private dormitories near the University. For more information about housing, students can contact Housing, 108 CAW, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32306. Generally, the cost of living in Tallahassee is moderate.

How to Apply
Students may apply online at http://admissions.fsu.edu/gradonline.html or fill out the general application for admission, which is available from Graduate Admissions; seek information about a program online at http://admissions.fsu.edu/forms/grad.html; and contact the academic department to which they are applying if they wish to be considered for financial assistance. While there are University-wide requirements for admission, the requirements for each program are set by the faculty members in that program and may be higher than University-wide requirements. The GRE General Test is required of all students (GMAT for business). Applications are carefully reviewed with due consideration to the academic record, test scores, letters of recommendation, and expressions of interest. A TOEFL score of 550 or better is required for applicants whose native language is not English. While admission deadlines vary by department, students should submit all materials by early January to be considered for all forms of financial assistance.
