Overview
Florida Institute of Technology is a distinctive, independent university, founded in 1958 by a group of scientists and engineers to fulfill a need for specialized, advanced educational opportunities on the Space Coast of Florida. Florida Tech is the only comprehensive, independent scientific and technological university in the southeast. Supported by both industry and the community, Florida Tech is the recipient of many research grants and contracts, a number of which provide financial support for graduate students.
Graduate students constitute more than one fourth of the students attending Florida Tech's Melbourne campus. Enrolled graduate and undergraduate students represent forty-nine states and more than eighty countries.
The Location and Community
Melbourne is located on the central east coast of Florida. The area offers a delightful year-round subtropical climate and is 10 minutes from the ocean beaches. Kennedy Space Center and the massive NASA complex are just 45 minutes north of Melbourne. The city of Orlando, Walt Disney World, and EPCOT are 1 hour west of the Florida Tech main campus.
Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The Graduate School offers master's, education specialist's (Ed.S.), and doctoral degree programs. The School of Management offers the M.B.A. degree. The College of Engineering offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental science, mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, and oceanography. Master's programs are also offered in computer information systems, engineering management, environmental resources management, software engineering, and systems engineering. The College of Science and Liberal Arts offers master's and doctoral degrees in applied mathematics, biological sciences, chemistry, physics, science education, and space sciences. Master's degrees are offered in applied mathematics, computer education, environmental education, math education, operations research, teaching, and technical and professional communication. The Ed.S. degree in science education is also awarded. The School of Psychology offers the Psy.D. degree in clinical psychology, the M.S. in applied behavior analysis, and the M.S. and Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology. The School of Aeronautics offers a Master of Science degree in aeronautics with specializations in airport development and management and aviation safety and a Master of Science degree in aviation human factors.
Facilities & Resources
Laboratories on campus are equipped for research in the various programs of study. These are supplemented by the Life Science Research Complex, Applied Research Laboratories, Claude Pepper Institute for Aging and Therapeutic Research, Reproductive Biology Laboratory, Center for Energy Alternatives, and aquaculture and marine research facilities at Oceanside in Vero Beach. Additional facilities include a solar energy research laboratory and laboratories for optical and solid-state physics, environmental and water pollution analysis, electromagnetics, materials testing and research, electron microscopy, and cytogenetics, as well as in numerous other areas.
The Academic and Research Computing Services (ARCS) provides graduate students with a wide range of computing resources for course work and research. These resources include a Sun Enterprise 3000 and Harris Lab 5227 with several Sun SPARC and GSI Workstations. These machines are connected internally as part of the campus network and externally to the Internet. Many programs and departments have their own computing resources that are also connected to the campus network. Access to these computing resources is available in computer labs and academic units and through dial-up lines. Programming languages supported include C, Pascal, ADA, Fortran, and C++. A staff of professionals is available to assist users with consultation and documentation. In addition to these resources, ARCS maintains a large microcomputer center in the Library Pavilion.
Expenses and Aid
Tuition for graduate study is $880 per semester hour. A tuition deposit of $300 (deducted from the first semester's tuition charge) is required of all new students. Books are estimated to cost $900 per year.
Financial Aid:
Graduate student assistantships for instruction and research are available to well-qualified master's and doctoral degree students. Assistantships carry stipends plus a tuition waiver. In some cases, a tuition waiver alone may be awarded for a limited amount of service. Assistantships for master's degree students are normally for an academic year; assistantships for doctoral students are renewable on a yearly basis.
Housing/Living Expenses:
Room and board on campus cost approximately $3500 per semester. On-campus housing (dormitories and apartments) is available for full-time single and married graduate students, but priority for dormitory rooms is given to undergraduate students. Many apartment complexes and rental houses are available near the campus.
How to Apply / Application
Forms for applying to the Graduate School and for assistantships are sent on request. Applications for assistantships must be submitted by February 15. Department of Biology students must complete the application process by March 1. Doctor of Psychology applicants must complete the application process by January 15 and begin their program of study in the fall. Applied behavior analysis and industrial/organizational psychology applicants must complete the application process by February 1. Electronic application and related forms are available on the Florida Tech Web page (listed below) under graduate admissions.
