Rated among the finest regional universities in the country in several recent publications, Millersville has a tradition of graduate education that dates back nearly half a century. Established in 1855 as the Commonwealth's first normal school, Millersville University is one of fourteen institutions in the State System of Higher Education. A multipurpose university situated on a 250-acre campus, Millersville blends the spirit of innovation with the strength of tradition in academic and professional programs that serve a diverse regional population. The campus reflects a combination of the old and the new, with beautiful Victorian buildings and state-of-the-art research labs and technology centers.

The Community
Millersville University is in Lancaster County, the heartland of central Pennsylvania and the rural Pennsylvania Dutch culture. Adjacent to the city of Lancaster, a thriving metropolitan area of diverse commercial and cultural institutions, the University is situated in a peaceful residential borough of tree-lined streets and gently rolling hills. The campus is a 11&Mac218;2-hour drive from Philadelphia and Baltimore, 21&Mac218;2 hours from Washington, D.C., and 31&Mac218;2 hours from New York City.

The University's total enrollment is 7,900, including 900 graduate students. The graduate enrollment includes students from numerous states and several countries. Many graduate students are engaged in or intend to pursue careers in teaching, while others have achieved success in varying professions. Students regularly go on to distinction in doctoral programs in the nation's finest universities. A Graduate Student Association represents the academic and social interests of the graduate student population.

Programs of study and degree requirements
Millersville University of Pennsylvania offers programs of study leading to the master's degree (M.A., M.Ed., M.S., and M.S.N.) in art, biology, early childhood, educational leadership, elementary education, English, foreign languages, history, mathematics, nursing, psychology, reading and language arts, school counseling, special education, sport management, and technology education. Students may also pursue graduate level supervisory and post-master's certification credentials.

The University calendar consists of two regular semesters, which begin in August and January, and modified summer sessions. The Foreign Language Department offers course work only through its innovative summer language institutes. Students may pursue graduate degrees on a full-time or part-time basis, but generally must complete their course of study within a five-year period (seven years for the foreign language programs).

Facilities & Resources
The Helen A. Ganser Library is the main research repository on campus, with approximately 1 million books, periodicals, and media resources. The library is a member of the Keystone Library and the Pennsylvania Academic Library Networks, which provide direct access to the collections of more than sixty academic libraries and to thousands of electronic abstracts, indexes, journals, and business services. It is also a depository for selected U.S. government publications and Pennsylvania state documents. State-of-the-art computer labs complement online computer labs across campus. A Marine Science Consortium, the Center for Regional Studies, the Center for Academic Excellence, the Center for Politics and Public Affairs, the Elizabeth Jenkins Early Childhood Learning Center, several multimedia art galleries, and more specialized research centers offer students a vast array of research opportunities.

Expenses and Aid
Tuition for the academic year is $380 per credit for in-state resident students and $590 per credit for out-of-state graduate students. Students also paid a general fee of $42.40 per credit. Tuition and fees are expected to increase slightly for the next academic year.

Housing
Housing on campus for graduate students during the fall and spring semesters is limited. Summer accommodations are available by reservation. Affordable residential housing is available near the campus. For campus housing, students should contact the Resident Life Office at 717-872-3162. Financial Aid
Graduate assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to master's degree and graduate-level certification students. Remuneration for assistantships includes a first-year stipend of $4000 and a waiver of tuition fees to a maximum of 24 graduate credits in a calendar year. The stipend for second year studies is $4500. Assignments include most academic programs and many administrative offices. Student work-study positions are available, and the University administers a range of loan programs. Interested students should contact the Office of Graduate Studies. In order to receive full consideration, assistantship applications should be received no later than March 31.

How to Apply
Applicants to degree programs must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. In addition to the application form, a $30 nonrefundable fee, official transcripts, and official GRE, MAT, or GMAT scores (depending on the program) are required. International students are required to submit a TOEFL score and financial information forms. Application deadlines are March 1 for summer and fall admission and October 1 for winter and spring admission. Students who do not meet regular admissions requirements may be granted provisional admission status.
