Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The School of Education and Urban Studies (SEUS) at Morgan State University was established in 1981 by the merger of the School of Education and the School of Urban Studies and Human Development. The School of Education and Urban Studies has the primary responsibility for provision of high-quality professional programs of study for careers in education, social work, mental health, and family and consumer sciences. The graduate programs in mathematics education and in science education are housed in the Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy at SEUS. These master's and doctoral programs prepare graduates for professional careers in science or mathematics education as teacher educators, researchers, administrative leaders, curriculum developers, and education specialists in related corporations or organizations. The goal of the graduate programs in science and mathematics education is to provide students with a rigorous background in current science and mathematics education research and theory, while providing opportunities to engage in research and in the application of research and theory-based knowledge for instructional development and teacher education projects. The programs are designed for full-time or part-time study and include disciplinary studies in mathematics or science, in addition to pedagogy, research methods, and educational foundations.

Facilities & Resources
The SEUS is linked to several centers and school systems, which enables students to gain practical experience and undertake research while completing their degree. For example, the Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) is directly linked to the mathematics and science graduate programs. CEMSE provides opportunities for students to undertake research and projects aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of mathematics and science teachers in Maryland; strengthening instruction in the elementary, middle, and high school programs in mathematics and science; increasing the effective use of educational technology at all levels of instruction; strengthening the mathematics and science education curricula at Morgan State University; and sponsoring student academic preparation for successful entry into science- and mathematics-related professions. The M.S. and the Ed.D. programs in mathematics or science education enable students to work directly with mathematics and science classrooms in the Maryland public school system. Students are required to design and implement interventions that could lead to improved delivery of mathematics or science education in the elementary, secondary, or postsecondary level. The interventions are approved, implemented, and assessed under the guidance of an assigned adviser. SEUS is linked to several professional development schools in the city of Baltimore that provide ready access for student and faculty member research.
