Overview
Oakland University, founded in 1957, is a comprehensive state-supported institution of higher education. The University is organized into the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering and Computer Science, Health Sciences, and Nursing.

Total enrollment for is 17,440. Twenty-one percent of the total enrollment is graduate students. Within the graduate enrollment, 64 percent are women and 14.3 percent are members of ethnic minority groups. The diverse student body includes international students representing many different countries.

The Location and Community
Oakland University is located 25 miles north of Detroit in suburban Oakland county. OU is situated on 1,500 rolling acres near parks, recreational areas, and a large concentration of high-technology industries. Many Fortune 500 companies are located in proximity to campus, which facilitates student research and internship opportunities.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
Oakland University (OU) offers eighty-six graduate degree and certificate programs at the master’s, doctoral, and specialist levels. Doctoral degrees may be earned in applied mathematical sciences; biomedical science, with a specialization in health and environmental chemistry or medical physics; reading; physical therapy; and systems engineering. The Education Specialist degree is available in school administration. Master’s degrees are offered in accounting; applied statistics; biology; business administration; chemistry; computer science and engineering; counseling; early childhood education; educational leadership; educational studies; electrical and computer engineering; embedded systems; engineering management; English; exercise science; history; industrial applied mathematics; information systems engineering; information technology management; liberal studies; linguistics; local government management; mathematics; mechanical engineering; music; nonprofit organization and management; nursing; physical therapy; physics; public administration; reading and language arts; software engineering; special education; systems engineering; and training and development. In addition, graduate certificate programs are offered in administrator certification (education), business administration, clinical exercise science, complementary medicine and wellness, corporate and worksite wellness, exercise science, microcomputer applications, neurological rehabilitation, nursing education, orthopedic manual physical therapy, pediatric rehabilitation, statistical methods, teaching and learning for rehabilitation professionals, and teaching English as a second language. An Executive M.B.A. is also available. Post-master’s specializations are available in accounting, advanced reading, business economics, educational administration, entrepreneurship, finance, general management, human resources management, international business, management information systems, marketing, nurse anesthesia, production/operations management, and reading and language arts. Oakland University also offers planned programs for teacher certification and endorsements. Graduate programs are linked closely to OU’s research, scholarship, and public service activities. Students are assumed to be partners in the implementation of programs. In the process, they are educated in the methods of intellectual inquiry and critical analysis and trained in the skills needed for their chosen fields. Through this partnership, the goals and purposes of graduate education are fulfilled.

Facilities & Resources
Most University library materials and services are housed in Kresge Library. The library’s automated catalog allows patrons to identify resources held not only in the Kresge Library but also in the collections of Wayne State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit Public Library, and numerous other libraries in the area. These include the Center for Biomedical Research, the Center for Robotics and Advanced Automation, the Cumulative Trauma Research Institute, the Eye Research Institute, the Fastening and Joining Research Institute (FAJRI), the Human Systems Initiative, the Institute for Action Research, the Institute for Biochemistry and Biotechnology, the Michigan Center for Automotive Research, the Product Development and Manufacturing Center, and the Public Affairs Research Laboratory. Research dollars have increased every year for the past six years to the current level of $6.2 million.

International Students
International applicants who are presently in the United States on a student status may be required to provide statements from the International Student Advisers at their current institutions. International students who do not enroll during their indicated semester of admission must submit an application to update at least eight weeks prior to the start of the term (fall or winter) in which they wish to enroll.

Expenses and Aid
The University operates on the semester system. The tuition for in-state graduate students is $393 per credit hour including fees, and the tuition for out-of-state graduate students is $696 per credit hour including fees. Full-time graduate students normally carry 8 credits per semester.

Financial Aid:
In order to assist eligible graduate students in financing their education, the University participates in the following programs: King/Chavez/Parks Fellowships, a limited number of which are available for qualified members of minority groups; the Federal Perkins Loan program; the Federal Work-Study Program; and the William Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. Graduate assistants are appointed by departments offering graduate degree programs. Stipends vary by discipline.

Housing/Living Expenses:
The rate for room and board is $,6480 for the academic year. Facilities with a selected number of single rooms are available to graduate students. For students with families, a limited number of two-bedroom town houses and two- to four-bedroom student apartments are available. The rent is $5,710 per academic year.

How to Apply
Application for admission and supporting documents must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office in time to meet appropriate program deadlines for each semester. All application materials and deadline information may be obtained from the Graduate Admissions Office. International applicants should submit both a University application and an international student application at least one year before the date they wish to enter the University.
