Overview
Old Dominion University is a cutting-edge research university and an innovative educational institution that is home to more than 20,000 students. The University's 6,500 graduate students have the opportunity to take their education to the next level by working with world-class scholars who are pushing the boundaries of their disciplines. As Virginia's international university, top students from all fifty states and 108 countries have dynamic exchanges in seminars, laboratories, and studios.

Old Dominion University has been designated a Doctoral/Research University/Extensive institution by the Carnegie Foundation. This designation reflects the strong commitment to graduate studies and research in all six of its colleges: the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Business and Public Administration, the Darden College of Education, the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Sciences. Graduate students at Old Dominion can pursue their academic and professional interests from among sixty-five master's degree programs, two education specialist programs, twenty-three doctoral programs, and numerous opportunities for internships.

The Location and Community
Old Dominion University's main campus is located in Norfolk, Virginia, one of seven major cities that make up Hampton Roads, an area with a population of 1.4 million. The campus is approximately 200 miles south of Washington, D.C.; within minutes of the world's largest naval base and the largest East Coast seaport; and 30 minutes from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. ODU also operates Higher Education Centers in Northern Virginia, Virginia Beach, Hampton, and the Tri-Cities of Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. Old Dominion sponsors fifty distance learning sites in Virginia, the District of Columbia, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Washington and delivers programs to Navy ships worldwide.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The College of Arts and Letters offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) in applied linguistics, applied sociology (in conjunction with Norfolk State University), English, history, humanities, international studies, and visual studies (in conjunction with Norfolk State); the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in creative writing and visual studies (in conjunction with Norfolk State); and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in international studies.

The College of Business and Public Administration offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) in economics, the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.); the Master of Science (M.S.) in accounting, the Master of Urban Studies (M.U.S.), the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in business administration, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in public administration and urban policy.

The Darden College of Education offers the Master of Science (M.S.) in occupational and technical studies; the Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in biology, chemistry, counseling, early childhood education, educational leadership, elementary education, English, general secondary education, higher education, middle school education, physical education, reading, school library media specialist, secondary education, special education, and speech-language pathology; the Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in educational leadership, higher education, and counseling; the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in community college leadership (higher education), and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in education. ODU also sponsors the Virginia Center for Career Transition, a military career program that prepares military personnel for a teaching career.

The Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology offers the Master of Science (M.S.) in aerospace, civil, computer, electrical, engineering management, engineering mechanics, environmental, materials science and engineering, mechanical, and modeling and simulation; the Master of Engineering (M.E.) in aerospace, civil, computer, electrical, engineering mechanics, environmental, experimental methods, global engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering with a specialization option in design and manufacturing, modeling and simulation, and systems engineering; the Master of Engineering Management (M.E.M.); the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in aerospace, civil, electrical and computer engineering, engineering management, environmental, mechanical, modeling and simulation, and engineering mechanics.

The College of Health Sciences offers the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) with concentrations in epidemiology and health management/policy (in conjunction with Eastern Virginia Medical School); the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) with specialization options in family nurse practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner, women's health nurse practitioner, nurse educator, nurse anesthetist, maternal child health clinical specialist, and nurse leadership; the Master of Science (M.S.) in community health, with concentrations in community health education and promotion, environmental health/occupational health, health care management, and long-term care administration; the Master of Science in dental hygiene, with specialization options in education, administration/management, research, marketing, and community health; the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in health services research; and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.).

The College of Sciences offers the Master of Science (M.S.) in biology, chemistry, computational and applied mathematics, computer science, geology, oceanography, physics, and psychology; the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in biomedical sciences (in conjunction with Eastern Virginia Medical School), computational and applied mathematics, computer science, ecological sciences, industrial/organizational psychology, oceanography, and physics; and the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology (a consortium program in conjunction with Norfolk State University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and the College of William and Mary).

Facilities & Resources
The University provides a rich array of resources to support research and creative work. The Perry library provides a full complement of state-of-the-art services for all clientele with more than 2.8 million items. External research funding is approximately $50 million and utilizes state-of-the-art oceanographic research vessels, the world's largest university-run wind tunnel, the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center, and significant high performance computing facilities. Many research projects involve partnerships with nearby premier research laboratories such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, NASA-Langley Research Center, and NASA-Wallops Flight Center.

Expenses and Aid
In-state tuition is $363 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition is $861 per credit hour. Other fees amounted to approximately $92 per semester.

Financial Aid:
Financial aid is available in the form of fellowships, research and teaching assistantships, and scholarships. Stipends generally ranged between $6,000 and $20,000 for the academic year. In addition, full tuition scholarships are available in some programs. Low-interest, deferred-repayment graduate loans are also available to U.S. citizens who can demonstrate need.

Housing/Living Expenses:
There are a wide range of affordable living and housing options on campus, close to campus, and in the Hampton Roads area. Campus residence halls with meal plans are also available.

How to Apply / Application
The application fee is $50. Applications and supporting credentials should be submitted well in advance of the preferred semester of entry to allow sufficient time for departmental review and processing. Deadlines, requirements, and financial aid information can vary significantly across departments so prospective students are encouraged to contact their department of interest as soon as possible. Financial awards are often made early in the admissions process. Applicants requesting financial aid are encouraged to submit all required credentials by February 15.
