Savannah College of Art and Design
Graduate School

An Overview
The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, coeducational college, preparing students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture. The College emphasizes individual attention in a positively oriented environment.
Approximately 5,500 students with various backgrounds and career objectives who are from all regions of the United States and more than eighty countries are enrolled. Most are full-time. The ratio of men to women is about equal.
The Community
The College is situated in the center of Savannah, Georgia's oldest city, only minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. Savannah has one of the largest urban National Historic Landmark districts and provides a stimulating environment for students. A symphony orchestra, theater and dance companies, museums, and many ethnic and arts festivals make Savannah both a cultural and a visual delight. Restaurants, movie theaters, clubs, and shops are easily accessible. Savannah's international airport, as well as train and bus service, links the city to domestic and overseas travel.
Programs of Study
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) offers graduate programs leading to three different master's degrees: a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), a Master of Arts (M.A.), and both professional and postprofessional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degrees. The M.F.A. program is a two-year course of study requiring 90 credit hours: 70 in the major program and 20 of electives. The M.A. program is a one-year course of study requiring 45 credit hours. These degrees are offered in architectural history, art history, computer art, fashion, fibers, furniture design, graphic design, historic preservation, sequential art, and video/film. M.F.A. students are required to participate in two internships as part of their course of study. Field internships and teaching internships are available. The professional M.Arch. program (with a B.F.A. in passing) is a course of study requiring at least 225 quarter hours (180 undergraduate and 45 graduate). The postprofessional M.Arch. degree requires 45 graduate quarter hours in the program of study. It is designed for students who have earned an accredited professional architecture degree and who elect to pursue a graduate degree with emphasis on computer-aided design. The programs are designed for the dedicated, self-motivated student who is committed to the pursuit of excellence in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, or the history of art and architecture.
Facilities and Resources
Studios and classrooms with state-of-the-art equipment are available in each area of concentration. A restored 1946 performing arts theater is part of the campus facilities, as is a four-story building that houses the media and performing arts department and a 150-seat, black box theater. Architecture, interior design, and historic preservation facilities include a network system, which connects a large number of PCs configured with a diverse range of electronic design software, including AutoCAD, DataCAD, Microstation, PhotoShop, 3D Studio Viz, Form Z, SurfCAM, and Alias. A fully integrated intranet system offers downloadable 3-D models, building use maps, and other information. A video microscope is also available, as are architectural conservation, metals conservation, and paint analysis labs and photography and wood and metal shops. Art and architectural history students have many resources, including several campus galleries that provide constant stimulation for students who are invited to critique exhibitions by internationally renowned artists for the student newspaper. A number of campus galleries also exhibit student and faculty work. Professional internships with heritage organizations or museums provide valuable practical experience for students in these majors. Lecture series and symposia sponsored by the departments offer students opportunities to meet visiting professionals and leading scholars. The College library is also an excellent resource; it contains approximately 295,000 slides, 75,000 volumes, 900 periodicals, 2,500 microforms, and 2,100 audiovisuals. Computer art facilities consist of an intranet of Macintosh G4, Pentium IV, and SGI workstations configured with a diverse range of graphics software: high-end 2-D, 3-D, interactive, and compositing tools, including Alias/Wavefront, Maya Unlimited, Houdini, Pixar's Renderman, Softimage XSI, Discreet Logic Effect, Flint, Combustion, Mayafusion, Animo, ToonBoom, and the Adobe product line. Fashion and fibers students have a dedicated lab equipped with CAD workstations and scanners; sewing studios equipped with Juki industrial sewing machines and sergers; a heat transfer press; weaving facilities, including a variety of four- and eight-shaft floor looms, two AVL CompuDobby looms, an AVL electronic Jacquard loom, and equipment for screen printing, papermaking, felting, and book-binding. Furniture design and product/industrial design facilities include an extensive woodworking and metal and plastics fabrication lab, bench rooms, a plastic working area, a welding facility, CNC milling, spray booths, and a finishing room as well as an intranet of PCs configured with a diverse range of design software, including Alias Studio, Ashlar Vellum, AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Rhino, and 3Dstudio Max. Graphic design and illustration facilities include Macintosh computers with Zip drives, CD burners, scanners, and black and white laser printers. Quark Xpress, FreeHand, Illustrator, PhotoShop, Director, and other graphics packages are available. Students also have access to a Wacom Tablet and a digital camera for digital illustration. Metals and jewelry studios include equipment for anodizing, plating, etching, precision casting, finishing, and silversmithing. Students also have access to a kiln and an art foundry and use a network of PCs with a wide range of software. Photography students may utilize digital imaging labs, group and individual black and white darkrooms, and individual color darkrooms. Resources include professional color print processing machines for both negative and reverse papers, E-6 and C-41 color film processing machines, an alternative processes lab, studios, lighting equipment, and view and medium format cameras. For video/film, facilities include a Mark III Rank Cintel telecine and transfer suite, a leading AVID-certified training center consisting of Media Composer workstations with interactive CD-ROM/DVD technology, linear and nonlinear editing systems, digital audio workstations, high-end production equipment (such as the Steadicam EFP and Super Panther Dolly), a chromakey/green screen studio, three sound stages, individual postproduction suites, an audio-for-video mixdown suite, a surround sound studio, and an audio production studio that supports Mozart, a twenty-four-track digital recording console. There are forty computer labs across campus, including homework, Internet, and major-specific labs.
