The Location and Community The University’s main campus comprises 373, well-manicured acres in midtown St. Louis, Missouri, an affordable major Midwestern city. The campus is adjacent to Grand Center, a cultural district that includes Powell Symphony Hall, the Fox Theatre, the Sheldon Concert Hall, and the Grandel Square Theatre. Civic attractions such as the St. Louis Zoo, the Art Museum, the History Museum, the Science Center, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and professional sports facilities are easily accessible from the University. Programs of Study and Degree Requirements The Graduate School offers more than forty-eight programs of advanced study. In addition to the degree programs, certificates may be pursued parallel to degree study in empirical research methods in descriptive ethics, rhetorical studies/writing pedagogy, medieval studies, Renaissance studies, women’s studies, university teaching skills, geographic information systems, organizational development, and health-care ethics. Post-master’s certificates are available in marriage and family therapy and in a variety of nursing specialties. Opportunities for dual degree programs that facilitate simultaneous training in one of the University’s professional schools (e.g., law, medicine, business, or social service) also are available. Facilities & Resources One of a handful of Catholic universities classified as a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, Saint Louis University has invested $100 million in a five-year initiative that has led to the establishment of designated research funds, the addition of seventy-five new graduate research assistantships, and a center of excellence for areas of research with national prominence. The University is building a state-of-the-art research facility, which will strengthen Saint Louis University’s ability to obtain important external funding and lead to additional clinical studies and innovative research programs. The combined holdings of the University libraries total approximately 1.82 million volumes and 15,000 continuations. Through Saint Louis University’s participation in the Online Computer Library Center, users have bibliographic access to more than 45 million titles in sixty-two countries in virtually any language. Special collections include 35 million pages of Vatican manuscripts and extensive theological holdings. The University is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (Chicago), and students also have access to the libraries of the University of Missouri and Washington University in St. Louis. Computer centers and research offices are staffed throughout the campus. The University’s urban location has allowed the development of unique research opportunities with numerous public and private agencies and corporations. Expenses and Aid The cost is $860 per Graduate School credit hour. Financial Aid: Financial assistance is available to qualified graduate students. Fellowships, traineeships, teaching, and research assistantships are awarded in most fields of study; full-tuition scholarships accompany stipends in many instances. Federal and state (Missouri) grants and loans and Federal Work-Study Program eligibility may be sought through the University’s Office of Financial Aid; a formal application and the need analysis are mandatory. Housing/Living Expenses: Limited on-campus housing exists for graduate and professional students. University board costs for a single student and a married couple are currently estimated at $9500 and $15,000 respectively, for the nine-month academic year.
