The University at Buffalo
State University of New York
Buffalo, New York

Overview
The University at Buffalo is the largest and most comprehensive public research university in New York and New England. The University’s two campuses make up the largest unit of the sixty-four-campus SUNY system. Its North Campus, the seat of most of its nonmedical sciences academic programs, occupies 2 square miles of fields and woods in suburban Amherst. It is one of the most modern university campuses in the nation. More than 5 million square feet of academic space, laboratories, libraries, residence halls, and recreation facilities have been built there since 1972. An expanded 30,000-seat football stadium, a $45-million Center for the Arts, an expanded Student Union, and apartment-style accommodations for students and families are recent additions to the North Campus. The University’s South Campus, 3 miles away in the residential northeast corner of Buffalo, is now largely devoted to the health sciences. Buffalo’s rapid transit system connects that campus with the city center and the waterfront.

The total enrollment of 27,276 consists of 14,140 men and 13,136 women. Graduate students number 9,437. The student body includes representatives from more than 100 countries.

The Location and Community
Buffalo is a Great Lakes city on an international border with a metropolitan population of more than 1 million. It is a city of friendly neighborhoods with big city recreation for all tastes: professional sports (football, hockey, indoor soccer, lacrosse, and Triple-A baseball), the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, a celebrated theater district, the renowned twentieth-century collection in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and a lively club scene. Buffalo enjoys four distinct seasons in a dramatic setting on Lake Erie and the Niagara River. Skiing, hiking, camping, sailing, boating, and Lake Erie beaches on both the U.S. and Canadian shores and the natural wonder of Niagara Falls are all nearby.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The Graduate School offers 184 master’s degree programs, ninety doctoral degree programs, and four professional programs, as well as a number of certificate and dual-degree programs. Interdisciplinary research is available through more than forty centers and graduate groups. The graduate programs and departments fashion individual curricula to meet specific objectives. Each program establishes its own requirements for admission, its own assessment of satisfactory student progress, and its own mandates for satisfactory completion of the degree offered under a broad institutional mandate for excellence. Each department is responsible for admitting its own students. For the master’s degree, one year of residence is required, as is a comprehensive test, a thesis based on independent research, or an appropriate special project. For the doctoral degree, the residence requirement is one year; other requirements include an evaluation of the student’s work in the doctoral program, an original dissertation, and an oral defense.

Facilities & Resources
The University at Buffalo (UB) has become a leader in developing and deploying an IT environment that empowers University members to accomplish their goals. Students and faculty members have multimedia e-mail; access to campus high-speed networks in laboratories, classrooms, and University residence halls and apartments; wireless access points on campus; Web access to extensive library resources; easy Web publishing; and extensive technical support and training. Through its digital initiative, the University libraries offer online access to major full-text information products covering journal literature, books, statistical data, worldwide newspapers, and hundreds of databases supporting research in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary studies. More than 2,200 personal computers and high-performance workstations are available to students in more than ninety public and departmental computing labs. Students also have access to computing on powerful clusters of UNIX time-sharing machines and to computational resources at one of the leading academic supercomputing sites in the U.S., the Center for Computational Research (CCR).

More than a dozen investigative centers and institutes are part of a research effort that exceeded $250 million in expenditures last year. In addition to governmental and private foundation support for research, UB receives considerable industrial support through research collaborations and affiliations. The University enjoys an international reputation, attracting students from all over the world and maintaining scholarly exchanges with institutions in several nations. Leading-edge interdisciplinary research centers integrating the fields of medicine, engineering, and physical sciences provide students with a unique environment to conduct research at the interfaces of disciplines. Some examples include the Center for Single-Molecule Biophysics; Center for Advanced Photonic and Electronic Materials; Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics; Research Institute on Addictions; Center for Hearing and Deafness; and Toshiba Stroke Research Center. The Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, a 129,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, is currently under construction on the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus after a commitment of more than $200 million from New York State and private industry. Other specialized centers include the Center for Studies in American Culture; Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy; Center for Urban Studies; Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth; Center of Excellence in Global Enterprise Management; National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis; Center for Assistive Technology; Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research; Environment and Society Institute; Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender; New York State Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation; and Center for Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition.

Expenses and Aid
Full-time tuition is $5,450 per semester for New York State residents and $7,460 per semester for nonresidents. Part-time tuition was $438 per credit hour for residents and $655 per credit hour for nonresidents. Tuition in the professional schools is higher. All tuition rates are subject to adjustment by the Board of Trustees.

Financial Aid:
Many students hold teaching, graduate, or research assistantships. A number of competitive fellowship programs are also available, including opportunities for students who are members of underrepresented minority groups. Full or partial tuition scholarships accompany most assistantships and fellowships. Graduate Opportunity Tuition Scholarships are available to students who participated in undergraduate EOP, HEOP, or SEEK programs. Students should contact the department for information and applications. The most up-to-date contact information for all of UB’s graduate and professional programs can be found at the Web site listed below.

Housing/Living Expenses:
The University at Buffalo has four apartment complexes that house graduate students. One complex has two-bedroom town-house apartments. Rent is approximately $960 per month (entire apartment), plus utilities. These are available for graduate students and married students only. Another apartment complex consists of furnished studio and one- and two-bedroom apartments. This complex houses graduate and undergraduate students. Rents range from $605 to $680 per student, including all utilities except telephone service. The third apartment complex has furnished one- and two-bedroom apartments. This complex also houses graduate and undergraduate students. Rents range from $575 to $650 per student, including all utilities except telephone service.
