Overview
The University of Florida is a major, public, land-grant, research university. The state’s oldest, largest, and most comprehensive university, UF is among the nation’s most academically diverse. One of only seventeen land-grant universities in the Association of American Universities, UF has a long history of established programs in international education, research, and service. UF also has an outstanding intercollegiate sports program.

UF’s 48,000 students are from all sixty-seven Florida counties (86 percent), the remaining forty-nine states (9 percent), and 100 other countries (5 percent). The University of Florida is the tenth-largest university in the U.S. and the largest university in the Southeast. UF is the number one Florida recruiter and the number four U.S. recruiter of National Merit Scholars (after Harvard, Yale, and Texas). Of fall freshmen, 25 percent have GPAs above 4.0 and SAT I scores above 1360. UF’s student body is made up of 48 percent men. Five percent (9,500) are members of minority groups. Seventy-two percent are undergraduate students (34,000), 21 percent are graduate students (9,300), and 7 percent are professional students (4,600).

The Location and Community
An hour from each coast, the Gainesville metropolitan statistical area’s population is near 240,000. One of the 100 best U.S. cities, Gainesville’s urban forest makes its home in Florida’s heart. Highs average 76°F to 82°F in the spring and fall, 89°F to 91°F in the summer, and 69°F in the winter. Alachua County delights nature lovers with its 965 square miles, 65 percent of which are made up of wilderness, lakes, wetlands, and trails.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The University of Florida (UF) Graduate School offers the Ph.D. in eighty-six disciplines, in addition to the Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Plant Medicine degrees. There are master’s programs in 111 disciplines, fourteen Engineer degree programs, and twelve Specialist in Education programs. In addition, a number of interdisciplinary concentrations are available at the doctoral level, and there are many successful joint-degree programs. Professional postbaccalaureate degrees are offered in dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, physician assistance, and veterinary medicine.

Facilities & Resources
UF major research centers include the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research; the Center for Environmental Systems Commercial Space Technology; the Center for Applied Optimization; the Database Systems Research and Development Center; the Engineering Research Center for Particle Science and Technology; the Florida Museum of Natural History; the Genetics and Cancer Research Center; the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity; the McKnight Brain Institute; the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory partnership with Florida State University and Los Alamos; the Proton-beam Therapy Center; and the new Public Health and Health Professions, Nursing, and Pharmacy Building.

UF’s nine libraries offer more than 4 million catalogued volumes and links to fulltext articles in more than 34,000 journals. Of national significance are the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, the Latin American Collection, the Map and Imagery Library, the P. K. Yonge Library of Florida History (preeminent Floridiana collection), the Price Library of Judaica, and holdings on architectural preservation and eighteenth-century American architecture, late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century German state documents, rural sociology of Florida, and tropical and subtropical agriculture.

International Students
International applicants whose native language is not English must also supply TOEFL scores. UF International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), part of UF Academic Affairs, helps the campus community with immigration matters and provides services to international students, scholars and their dependents: admission, orientation, academic and personal counseling, emergency assistance, community relations and student activities.

Expenses and Aid
Tuition is $414.44 per credit hour for Florida residents and $1,084.63 per credit hour for nonresidents. Near graduation, there are expenses for typing and duplicating a thesis (dissertation) and fees for library processing, microfilming, and publishing the dissertation abstract.

Financial Aid:
The Graduate Fellowship Initiative (http://www.aa.ufl.edu/fellows) offers Alumni Graduate Fellowships to superior students entering Ph.D. and M.F.A. programs. In addition, qualified graduate students are eligible for other fellowships, assistantships, and awards (http://gradschool.rgp.ufl.edu/students/financial-aid.html). UF also has a substantial number of fellowships targeted specifically for underrepresented students (http://gradschool.rgp.ufl.edu/diversity/introduction.html#ogmp). Applications for these awards should be made to the appropriate department chair on or before February 15 of each year.

Non-Florida tuition payments and in-state tuition payments are available to eligible graduate students who hold assistantships or certain fellowships. These payments cover most tuition charges.

Housing/Living Expenses:
UF provides some variety in types of accommodations. The double room for 2 students is the most common. Air-conditioned dormitory rooms range from $1,668 to $2,710 per person per semester. Accommodations for single graduate or professional students in Diamond Apartment Village begin at $521 per person per month. At present, a one-bedroom unfurnished apartment off campus rents for about $750 per month.

How to Apply
First-time UF graduate students need a B average for all upper-division undergraduate work, a verbal and quantitative combined GRE score of 1000, and a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Individual departments may have higher requirements. Applicants whose native language is not English need a TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or 213 on the computer-based test.
