University of Hawaii
College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources
Honolulu, Hawaii 96822

Overview
The University of Hawaii at Manoa was founded in 1907 as a land-grant college of agriculture and mechanic arts. Today, it is a major comprehensive research institution with about 17,000 students and offers course work leading to bachelor's degrees in eighty-eight fields of study, master's degrees in eighty-seven, doctorates in fifty-five, first professional degrees in law and medicine, and a number of certificates. It is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

There are 4,567 graduate students at Manoa. The College's 136 graduate students come from throughout the United States and many countries, as well as from Hawaii, and represent a diversity of educational, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

The Community
The University of Hawaii is located in Manoa Valley, a residential section close to the heart of Metropolitan Honolulu, the capital of the state of Hawaii. The campus is a short distance from the center of the commercial, cultural, and political life of Hawaii, and a variety of recreational, athletic, and social activities are available to students throughout the year. Hawaii's population is diverse, and its climate moderate and tropical. Hawaii provides CTAHR with a living laboratory that cannot be duplicated elsewhere: a full range of the soils and climates found throughout the world; tropical plants, animals, and organisms; and a location as the gateway to Asia and the Pacific Basin.

Programs of study and degree requirements
The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) is known nationally and internationally as a leader in tropical agriculture. The College belongs to the nationwide network of land-grant universities, and CTAHR's tripartite mission is visible in its separate but interacting programs in teaching, research, and public service. CTAHR offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the following graduate programs: Agricultural and Resource Economics, Agronomy and Soil Science, Botanical Sciences (Plant Physiology), Botanical Sciences (Plant Pathology), Entomology, and Horticulture. CTAHR also offers the M.S. degree in Biosystems Engineering, Animal Sciences, Food Science, and Nutritional Sciences programs. Three of the College's graduate programs in tropical agriculture—Agronomy and Soil Science, Entomology, and Horticulture—have been recognized as distinctive programs by WICHE, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education; qualified graduate students from participating states (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) may enroll in these Western Regional Graduate Programs at resident tuition rates.

Upon acceptance, the student and his or her adviser develop a program of study that generally includes required and elective courses and seminars, written and oral examinations, and original research guided by a major professor. At the master's level, both Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (nonthesis) programs are offered.

Facilities & Resources
CTAHR shares in the use of general University facilities, including the libraries, which offer extensive collections and information services, and the computing center, which provides a full range of computers, from individual computers to large mainframes. It jointly sponsors, with the Pacific Biomedical Research Center, the Biotechnology–Molecular Biology Instrumentation Facility for the benefit of researchers throughout the University of Hawaii. The College's facilities include a microcomputer laboratory, several research stations, and specialized laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, all of which support research and instruction in the agricultural sciences. On-campus affiliations with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, Water Research Center, East-West Center, Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, Sea Grant College Program, and Hawaii Natural Energy Institute extend CTAHR's resources. The College also is affiliated closely with off-campus institutions, such as the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, USDA/ARS Tropical Fruit and Vegetable Research Laboratory, Hawaii Agricultural Research Center, U.S. Geological Survey, National Marine Fisheries Service, and Hawaii State Department of Agriculture.

Expenses and Aid
The
estimated tuition for full-time study (12 or more credit hours) is $2888 per semester for residents of Hawaii and $6088 for nonresidents. Part-time graduate students are assessed $224 per credit hour for Hawaii residents and $524 for nonresidents.

Financial Aid: Students may contact individual departments (listed on the reverse of this page), the Graduate Division (2540 Maile Way, Spalding Hall, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822), or the Financial Aids Office (2600 Campus Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822) for information on grants, fellowships, assistantships, scholarships, tuition waivers, loans, work-study programs, and job opportunities. Graduate assistantships start at $14,958 per year for M.S. candidates and $16,176 per year for Ph.D. candidates for eleven-month half-time appointments.

Housing/Living Expenses: Dormitory rooms and apartments, ranging from approximately $1085 to $1915 per person per semester, are available to single and married graduate students. These accommodations are on campus within walking distance of classrooms and laboratories. Meal plans are available through the University food service for $1034 to $1180 a semester. Most graduate students elect to live off campus in shared apartments and houses, the costs of which vary widely.

How to Apply
Applications, transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation must be submitted. Applications are processed as early as October 1 for the fall semester and May 1 for the spring semester. The deadline for international students is January 15 and August 1 for fall and spring semesters, respectively. International students must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores in addition to the items mentioned above. Information regarding the program, admission criteria, and financial assistance is available from the individual departments (the names and addresses of the departmental chairs are listed on the reverse side). Additional information may be obtained from the individual departments.
