Overview / Graduate Studies Video
The University of Idaho was created in 1889, a year before Idaho became a state. UI is a publicly supported, comprehensive land-grant institution with principal responsibility in Idaho for performing research and granting the Ph.D. degree. More than 750 faculty members participate in teaching and research. In addition to the accreditation of individual programs, the University is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
The Community
Moscow is located in the Idaho panhandle among the rolling hills of the Palouse. It is an agricultural and recreational area and is the cultural center of the region. Local music and theater productions have received international acclaim. Skiing and lake and river sports are within easy drives. Spokane is 88 miles north, and Seattle and Portland are each 6 hours west.
Programs of Study
As the land-grant institution and research center of the state of Idaho, the University of Idaho (UI) offers twenty-six doctoral programs, seven specialist degrees, and sixty-six master's degrees. Graduate students are able to pursue degrees full- or part-time.
All of the graduate programs are available on the main campus in Moscow. Graduate programs in education disciplines are available at UI's Coeur d'Alene and Boise centers, graduate programs in engineering and natural resources are available at UI's Boise center, and graduate programs in engineering disciplines and several physical science disciplines are available at the Idaho Falls center. In addition, engineering and psychology (human factors option) graduate programs are available through UI's Video Outreach Program on the Web and through compressed video.
The minimum requirements beyond a bachelor's degree for each graduate degree are as follows: for a doctoral degree, 78 semester credits of course work and a dissertation, successful completion of the departmental preliminary examination, and successful defense of the dissertation; for a specialist degree, 60 semester credits of course work and successful completion of the departmental comprehensive examination; and for a master's degree, between 30 and 60 semester credits (depending on the degree) and successful completion of a thesis, project, or comprehensive examination (depending on the degree).

Facilities and Resources
Research is a primary function of UI and is significant in each graduate department. UI currently participates in several Experimental Programs to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) funded by the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy.
UI has three dozen additional research units, both within individual disciplines and encompassing several departments, including the the Center for Applied Thero-Dynamics Studies; the Center for Secure and Dependable Software; the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology; the Center for Hazardous Waste Remediation; the Forest, Wildlife and Range Experiment Station; the Glaciological and Arctic Sciences Institute; the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station; the Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit; the Idaho Geological Survey; the Idaho Water Resources Research Institute; the Institute for Materials and Advanced Processes; the Environmental Research Institute; the Institute for Pacific Northwest Studies; the Laboratory of Anthropology; and the Microelectronics Research and Communications Institute.
The UI libraries contain approximately 2.5 million items, including more than 12,000 serial titles. The main library recently completed a major expansion and renovation.

Fees are subject to change.
Financial Aid: Many departments offer teaching assistantships or research assistantships, which include a waiver of nonresident tuition. Information on assistantships may be obtained directly from the appropriate department director of graduate studies. Financial aid is also available through the Federal Perkins Loan Program, the Federal Stafford Student Loan Program, and work-study grants. Information and applications can be provided by the Student Financial Aid Office.
