University of Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky

Overview
The University traces its history to 1798 with the founding of the Jefferson Seminary. It became the University of Louisville in 1846 and a part of the state university system in 1970. Among its major divisions are the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Public Administration, Graduate School, Kent School of Social Work, J. B. Speed School of Engineering, Brandeis School of Law, School of Music, and College of Education and Human Development, which are located on the main campus about 2 miles from the downtown area. The School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health and Information Sciences are located in the heart of a growing sixteen-square-block Health Sciences Center. The University of Louisville is a member of the Kentuckiana Metroversity, which aims at cooperative ventures among the six institutions of higher education in the area, and is a Doctoral/Research University-Extensive (among the top 3.8 percent in the nation) in the Carnegie rankings.

More than 4,900 graduate students are enrolled in various departments of the University. Approximately one fourth are working toward doctorates. Students come from all areas of the United States and a number of other countries.

The Location and Community
The Louisville Metro area, situated on the Ohio River, includes more than three quarters of a million people and is the sixteenth-largest city in the nation. Resident opera, art, theater, choral, ballet, and orchestral societies provide Louisville with cultural resources beyond those typically available in cities of comparable size. The surrounding countryside is rich in natural resources; many local and state parks provide a variety of outdoor activities. Each May, the famed Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The Graduate School of the University of Louisville offers programs of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in anatomical sciences and neurobiology, applied and industrial mathematics, art history, biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, biostatistics-decision science, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, clinical psychology, computer science and engineering, counseling and personnel services, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and organizational development, electrical engineering, English (rhetoric/composition), entrepreneurship, epidemiology: clinical investigation sciences, experimental psychology, humanities, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, microbiology and immunology, musicology, nursing, pharmacology and toxicology, physics, physiology and biophysics, social work, and urban and public affairs. A Doctor of Audiology degree is also offered. Degree programs combining medicine or dentistry with a number of pure and applied science fields are also offered. Programs of study leading to the master’s degree are available in more than sixty different areas, including interdisciplinary studies. The Master of Arts in Teaching degree is offered for prospective elementary, secondary, and junior college teachers.

Each student is expected to take those courses required for advancement of general knowledge in his or her discipline as well as courses in a field of specialization. Although guidelines for study have been established by each department, curricula may be tailored to meet the needs, abilities, and interests of the student. All appropriate courses offered by the University are open to the doctoral student, with permission of the instructor. The doctoral degree is awarded in recognition of creative scholarship and research, and therefore some degree of flexibility exists regarding curricular requirements. In general, a thesis or dissertation of significant value and quality, developed under the supervision of a faculty preceptor, is required. The doctoral student usually completes the program in about four to five years of full-time work, whereas the master’s programs usually require two years of study.

Facilities & Resources
The University has a number of outstanding on-campus research facilities and, as a member of ORAU, provides access to the facilities and educational programs of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Kentucky Institute for the Environment and Sustainable Development provides an exciting venue for interdisciplinary research in environmental science, policy, and education. The Urban Studies Institute is in direct contact with the community through public service and research related to problems of urban life, community development, and city planning. New, state of-the-art research buildings have been constructed on the Health Sciences and Main campuses and house numerous centers and institutes, including Nanotechnology, Cellular Therapeutics, Genetics and Molecular Medicine, and Molecular Cardiology. The Kentucky Lions Eye Research Institute is a modern 75,000-square-foot facility equipped for molecular biological, biochemical, physicochemical, electrophysiological, morphometric, and transgenic studies of the eye and the visual system. The General Electric Factory Automation Laboratory provides a model factory environment and includes a rapid prototyping center, industrial robots, computer-aided engineering facilities, and space for research and development projects. The University Libraries, a member of the Association of Research Libraries, has holdings of more than 1.3 million volumes and microtexts and nearly 13,000 serials. Students also have access to the collections of six other area institutions.

Expenses and Aid
Full-time tuition is $25,274 per year for nonresidents and $9,810 per year for Kentucky residents. Student fees are prorated on a credit-hour basis; however, full-time is considered 9 credit hours each semester and 6 credit hours in the summer.

Financial Aid:
A number of awards are available. In general, teaching and research assistantships vary from $10,000 to $15,000 in stipend and include full tuition remission and health insurance. Doctoral fellowships are available and carry a stipend of $18,000-$20,000 plus full tuition remission and health insurance. Prestigious Grawemeyer Award Fellowships are also available in music, education, and psychology..

Housing/Living Expenses:
Housing is available for single and married students on the University of Louisville’s main campus, 10 minutes from the Health Sciences Center. A one-bedroom apartment is $7,956 per year. Partially furnished apartments for married students cost $9,992 per year for a two-bedroom apartment, including utilities.

International Students
Applications from abroad may take several months to process, so international students are urged to submit complete application materials as early as possible. Materials should be received by the University at least 12 weeks prior to the first day of classes in the semester for which admission is sought. International applicants whose native language is not English must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores in addition to GRE or GMAT scores.

How to Apply
For application information and deadline dates, students should contact the department to which they wish to apply or the Graduate School.
