Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Overview
The School of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the various fields of the arts and sciences. In addition, the University includes the following academic units: the University Honors College; the College of General Studies; the Schools of Education, Engineering, Law, Dental Medicine, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Information Sciences, Social Work, Public and International Affairs, and Public Health; and the Joseph M. The University also operates four regional campuses in western Pennsylvania: Johnstown, Greensburg, and Bradford offer four-year baccalaureate programs, and Titusville offers primarily a lower-division curriculum, including two-year associate degree programs.

The University’s total enrollment at the Pittsburgh campus is 26,931, including 12,453 men and 14,276 women. Enrollment in graduate and first-professional programs is 9,550, including 4,219 men and 5,331 women.

The Location and Community
Pittsburgh is the commercial, industrial, and cultural center of western Pennsylvania. It offers all of the advantages of a metropolitan setting—theaters, concert halls, museums, art galleries, a science center, a major symphony orchestra, parks, golf courses, playgrounds, major-league spectator sports, and an excellent public school system.

Programs of Study and Degree Requirements
The schools and faculties of the University of Pittsburgh offer programs of study leading to doctoral degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D., Au.D., C.S.C.D., D.P.T., and Dr.P.H.) in the following fields: anthropology, astronomy, biological sciences, business administration, chemistry, classics, computer engineering, computer science, economics, education, engineering, English, French, geology and planetary science, Germanic languages and literatures, health and rehabilitation sciences, Hispanic languages and literatures, Hispanic linguistics, history, history and philosophy of science, history of art and architecture, intelligent systems, information science, library and information science, linguistics, mathematics, medicine, molecular biophysics, music, neuroscience, nursing, pharmacy, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, public and international affairs, public health, religion, rhetoric and communication, Slavic languages and literatures, social work, sociology, statistics, and theater arts.

Master’s degree programs are available in most of the above fields, as well as in applied mathematics, applied statistics, bioethics, dental medicine specialities, East Asian studies, geographic information systems, international business, Italian, law, management of information systems, mathematics, religious studies, and telecommunications.

First-professional degree programs are offered in law (J.D., J.S.D., L.L.M.), dental medicine (D.M.D.), pharmacy (Pharm.D.), and medicine (M.D.). Certificate programs, dual-degree programs within schools, joint-degree programs between schools, and cooperative-degree programs with other institutions are also available.

Appointments for postdoctoral study and research are available in many of the University’s departments.

The University calendar consists of three 15-week terms, which begin in August, January, and May. A number of summer sessions, varying in length, are offered in the summer.

Facilities & Resources
There are twenty-five University library collections on the Pittsburgh campus, of which the Hillman Library is the current central facility. The University’s total libraries’ collection contains more than 9.2 million items (volumes and microforms), and more than 43,000 current serials. Electronically, the University’s libraries provide access to many remote resources. Cooperative arrangements have been developed with neighboring academic institutions, thus promoting a high level of information availability. The University of Pittsburgh is a member of the Association of Research Libraries.

Computing Services and Systems Development operates personal and centralized computing hardware to support academic, instructional, and research programs.

Other resources for research include the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Center, Learning Research and Development Center, Center for Minority Health, Center for Philosophy of Science, Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, University Center for Social and Urban Research, University Center for International Studies, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Center for Bioengineering, Surface Science Center, Center for Neuroscience, and Allegheny Observatory.

Expenses and Aid
Tuition for Pennsylvania residents for the academic year ranges from $8,924 to $12,249 per term for graduate degree programs and from $9,943 to $19,342 per term for first-professional degree programs. Tuition for out-of-state residents is usually double that for Pennsylvania residents.

Financial Aid:
Fellowships, traineeships, scholarships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships are offered in the various fields of advanced study. The principal nonservice awards are the Andrew Mellon Fellowships for predoctoral study in arts and sciences. For the academic year, departmental support (teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships, and graduate student assistantships) paid salaries of $11,745 to $16,690 for full-time, two-term appointments; full tuition scholarships based on merit were also awarded. Fractional appointments are available..

Housing/Living Expenses:
Most graduate students live off campus since there are limited on-campus housing accommodations for these students. The University’s Off-Campus Housing Service maintains lists of available rooms, apartments, and houses near the campus.

How to Apply
Admission to graduate programs is based on an overall evaluation of credentials, including the applicant’s undergraduate record, which should show approximately a B average or better in the major field. Additional requirements as well as deadlines for admission, fellowships, scholarships, traineeships, and assistantships vary by school and department.
