University of Wyoming
Laramie, Wyoming

Overview
The University of Wyoming was established as a land-grant college in 1886. As the state's only institution of higher learning offering four-year and graduate programs, the University has developed broad undergraduate and graduate curricula. New facilities have enhanced scholarship and graduate degree programs in all Colleges.
The University enrolls about 11,000 students. Of these, there are approximately 1,700 graduate students and 230 law students. About 75 percent of the students are residents of Wyoming, and 52 percent are women. The student-faculty ratio at the University of Wyoming is about 15:1.
The Community
Laramie, with a population of 27,204 is in southeastern Wyoming at a high elevation in a mountain valley. Denver, Colorado, is located 120 miles to the south. Several recreational areas are within a 15-minute drive. Some of the best ski areas in the United States are within 21&Mac218;2 hours from Laramie. The University of Wyoming draws many cultural events. The average summer temperature is 70 degrees; there may be some cold days in the winter, but the sun shines an average of 310 days per year.

The Graduate School of the University of Wyoming (UW) awards the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in twenty-five disciplines. The of Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) are also offered. The Master's degree is offered in sixty-four areas and include the following degree categories: Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Music (M.M.), Master of Planning (M.P.), Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.), Master of Social Work (M.S.W.), Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.), and Master of Science in e-Business (M.S.e.B.). An interdisciplinary Master of Science and an interdisciplinary Master of Arts are available, in which students may combine up to three areas of study. For further information, students interested in a particular program should see page two for a listing of degrees by discipline. The University of Wyoming is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive institution.

Library holdings total more than 1 million volumes. The American Heritage Center has valuable collections dealing with American history. The Geology Museum, University Art Museum, Wilhelm G. Solheim Mycological Herbarium, Rocky Mountain Herbarium, Anthropology Museum, and Rocky Mountain Systematic Entomology Laboratory are located on the campus. The Survey Research Center, Wyoming Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Institute of Business and Management Services, Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station (including the Research and Extension Centers throughout the state) and Williams Botany Conservatory, among others, provide research opportunities. The Elk Mountain and Jelm Mountain observatories (facilities for the study of weather phenomena and infrared astrophysics, respectively), the Department of Atmospheric Science flight facility, and the only University-owned balloon launch facility in the world are located near Laramie. Eight miles south of Laramie, the Red Buttes Environmental Biology Laboratory has excellent facilities for the study of wild animals and for aquatic toxicology. The Mineral Research and Reclamation Center, which houses the Department of Geology and Geophysics, is the newest addition to the University's facilities. The Computer Center is equipped with modern, sophisticated computers. The University computer system is connected to the Internet, linking UW with other universities, national laboratories, and supercomputers. Personal computers are available for student use. In addition to University facilities, the Wyoming Geological Survey, Wyoming Cooperative Fishery and Wildlife Research Unit, Wyoming Research Corporation, and USDA Arthropod-Borne Animal Disease Research Laboratory are located on campus and provide opportunities for graduate research. The University of Wyoming/National Park Research Center in Grand Teton National Park offers a variety of possibilities for graduate research.
